This year, we honor the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP), at the Commemorative Stone in Honor of the Victims of Extreme Poverty, which lies on the North Lawn of the United Nations’ Gardens.

Decent work
The International Labor Organization (ILO) defines decent work as “productive work for women and men in conditions of freedom, equity, security, and human dignity.” Decent work transforms unequal power relations by recognizing the worker as a rights holder. As such, they are entitled to the necessary education and training to do their work, a fair wage, social security, and safe working conditions.
In 2020, only 46.9 percent of the global population was effectively covered by at least one social protection benefit, leaving more than half of the world’s population wholly unprotected. For the people experiencing persistent poverty, a lack of decent working conditions and respectful social protection creates insecurity that prevents them from taking charge of their lives. It exposes them to exploitation, humiliation and feelings of futility, which in turn prevent them from participating fully in their communities.
Participatory spaces
Creating participatory spaces for people living in poverty to share their experiences is the first step towards creating policies that put their interests at the forefront. On December 22, 1992, the United Nations recognized October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP) in resolution 47/196. On that day, the United Nations ensures that the knowledge, contributions, and experience of people living in persistent poverty are heard, recognized, and celebrated.
Please join us as we call for decent work and social protection for all, and the eradication of poverty.
To empower with freedom, equity, security and human dignity for the decent work, organizing the vulnerable segments in to groups, which can be nested as a federation. This has to be owned, controlled and managed by them to secure the above. Enabling them to institutionalize with systematization, self growth, stability, sustainability and culture which would last for generation would be the way of empowering with decent work
