Poverty itself is violence. For many women and girls around the world, the juncture between gender and extreme poverty is a reality. Based on UN Women projections for 2022, an estimated 388 million women and girls globally live in extreme poverty.
At the current rate of progress, it is estimated to take another 300 years to achieve gender equality.
